Sun Valley Idaho
Regardless of the season, central Idaho's Sun Valley is buzzing with life. Who could blame it for luring so many people in? After all, it's difficult to resist its masses of wildflowers, ever expansive trails, and especially its guaranteed-to-be powdery slopes. The ski runs at Sun Valley are built for all levels of experience, so whether one is seasoned or just beginning, skiing is a blast. The all-day inner tubing isn't too shabby, either.
Fun in summertime may mean horseback tours, fly fishing, or even backpacking up rugged mountains. Is anyone up for golf or tennis afterward? Whatever the agenda, when the day is through, it's a relief to know that the right lodging was chosen. The vacation rentals at Warm Springs, River Run, and Sun Valley Village are hard to beat.
Warm Springs lies conveniently close to Bald Mountain. This place is perfect for those who would like to stay near a 3,000 ft. lift during winter and enjoy a mountainside view. After an exhausting day, guests may take advantage of steamy Jacuzzis. A close friend of mine stayed with me in one rental with a private hot tub, garage, and towering windows. This three-story Galena townhouse was indescribably stunning.
When we got hungry, food wasn't far. More than any other restaurant, we headed to the Warm Springs Day Lodge for a bite to eat, and its wood-fired pizza became our nightly comfort food. Brilliant as it was, there are still other unique places in Sun Valley to rest overnight.
Pennay's at River Run boasts incredibly hospitable service and lovely one-level condominiums. Some even offer a view of Big Wood River. In the morning, guests can throw on their gear and ski down a trail toward nearby lifts. They can also hitch a snowmobile back up at the end of the day. Pennay's is close to River Run Plaza, so bars, restaurants, and general entertainment are a short walk away.
Events range from wine auctions to art gallery walks. October brings the annual Jazz Jamboree. Highlights include dancing, free dance classes, bands, and the relaxing Afterglow Dinner. All year round, Smoky Mountain Pizza and Pasta serves impeccable meals, but Java on Fourth is my top choice for brunch.
The pioneer Saloon and Ketchum Grill prove that other magnificent restaurants lie near Sun Valley Village. Since this place is at least a half mile from any lift (though it does offer shuttle service), it is a summertime hotspot. Mountain bikers flock here, golfers bring their A-game, and rock climbers get ready to sweat in the surprising desert climate. Life in Sun Valley Village is always a hoot.
No matter which particular one is ideal, from the stereo system to the washer and dryer, each condominium is a completely furnished home away from home. Who could complain with a toasty fireplace at his/her disposal? When the Rockies are calling, remember that Sun Valley is only twelve miles north of the Friedman Memorial Airport, and an entirely furnished condo awaits your arrival.
